Trehalose inhibits the release of some inflammatory factors caused by drying. This ingredient provides hydration, but is also nearly weightless so it won't leave your skin greasy and does not contribute to clogged pores.
 
Mannitol is known to act as humectant and moisturizer. Therefore it increases the moisture content of the skin and keeps it soft and smooth. Additionally, humectants increase the active ingredients' ability to penetrate skin. A plant-derived sugar that works in skin care to bind moisture, condition, and also help keep ingredients blended together. It works well with naturally-occurring substances in skin such as hyaluronic acid. Mannitol is a sugar alcohol found in abundance in nature, particularly from trees, and in marine algae and fresh mushrooms. It is an isomer of Sorbitol and is typically produced today by the hydrogenation of specialty glucose syrups and sweeteners (Source). In cosmetics and beauty products, it is used primarily as a humectant, but can also be found serving as a binder, masking agent, moisturizing agent, flavoring agent (in lip balms, etc.) and skin conditioner.
 
Sorbital has a superior water-binding capacity and acts as a natural humectant, which attracts moisture from the air and binds it to your skin cells, slowing its evaporation. Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol that is used in skincare as a hydrating and moisturizing agent. Sorbitol also functions as a thickener, improving the texture of formulations. Sorbitol also acts as a prebiotic ingredient, helping to feed the naturally occurring bacteria on the skin. The skin has a natural microbiome that helps to protect the skin from harmful bacteria and infection. When the balance of the microbiome is affected by over washing, harsh products, or illness, it has been linked with weakened skin barrier and a decreased resilience to infection. Sorbitol may also be beneficial for aging skin. As we age our skin slowly loses the ability to maintain water-based hydration. The top few layers of the skin contain natural humectants or Natural Moisturizing Factors. NMF attract and retain water inside of skin cells to help in keeping skin hydrated.
