Pullulan is a naturally occurring, low viscosity polysaccharide that has good adhesive and foam-retention properties when dissolved in water. These properties enable Pullulan to be used for creating luxuriant smoothness for skin care, hair care and cleansing products, leaving a natural silicone-like after feel on the skin. With its film-forming ability, Pullulan also produces easily dissolvable films and face masks making it an effective and stable carrier for active ingredients, colors and fragrances. 
 
Pullulan may bring a temporary tightening effect to skin care products. Pullulan is readily soluble in water and it is stable over a broad range of pH conditions. Importantly, Pullulan solution is not highly viscous; therefore, it will not affect the viscosity when added to solutions.
 
As a texture-enhancing ingredient, characteristics of pullulan include its water solubility and relatively low viscosity compared to other polysaccharides. It possesses good thermal stability and has earned Generally Recognized as Safe (GRaS) status from U.S. FDA.
 
This ingredient is recommended for use at 0.1-0.3% in formulations to add a tightening feeling. Usage up to 20% is possible to form a thick gel which can dry to a peelable film
 
Pullulan is stable in aqueous solution over a wide pH range (pH 3-8). Pullulan decomposes upon dry heating and carbonizes at 250-280 °C. It dissolves readily in water but is insoluble in organic solvents.
